Why Gran Canaria, Why Now
Gran Canaria isn't just hosting this forum; it's demonstrating how islands can move from potential to drilling operations. After completing the most comprehensive surface exploration campaign across 7,000 survey points, the Gran Canaria Geotermia consortium has detected temperatures of 150-200°C at depth and will begin the first of three exploration wells to 2,700 meters in early 2026.
With €15 million secured through Spain's IDAE funding program and technical direction from New Zealand's JRG Energy, Gran Canaria is positioned to become Spain's first island to generate baseload geothermal electricity.
