    Tuvalu Launches its First Waste Plastic-to-Fuel Project

    Tuvalu has installed its first pyrolysis machine to transform waste plastic and used engine oil into usable fuel, turning a pollution challenge into a local energy opportunity. Developed through University of the South Pacific research and supported by the Pacific Adaptation of Waste to Energy Solutions programme, the technology can process 10 kilograms of plastic into about 10 litres of liquid fuel and four cubic metres of hydrocarbon gas. The fuels have been tested in generators, machinery and household stoves, offering practical benefits for households and communities while strengthening resource recovery and local energy security.

    How Vancouver Island University's Financial Stability Strengthened Its City

    Vancouver Island University has returned to financial health, with its Board of Governors approving a $5.3 million surplus for 2025-26 and a projected $1 million surplus for 2026-27. VIU enrolls 12,644 students and serves as a primary talent pipeline for Nanaimo employers across healthcare, manufacturing, and technology. Its applied research partnerships attract national funding and recognition. Financial stability positions VIU to remain a full partner in Nanaimo's long-term economic development. Vancouver Island University has been part of Nanaimo's fabric for nearly a century. It has trained the nurses, tradespeople, engineers, and entrepreneurs who helped build the region's workforce. For a mid-sized city built on diverse business and industry, it is one of the anchors that makes everything else possible. Which is why the news about VIU's return to financial stability matters more than most people realize. "VIU is no longer playing defense," said Dr. Dennis Johnson, VIU's Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. "We're investing in what comes next, for our students, our region, and the long-term health of this institution." After years of managing international enrollment volatility, rising operating costs, and deferred maintenance pressures, VIU enacted a deficit mitigation plan that required reducing its workforce by more than 200 positions. It was a difficult period for the university and for the community that depends on it. But it worked. On May 28, VIU's Board of Governors approved a 2026-27 budget projecting a $1 million surplus, following a $5.3 million surplus in 2025-26. Two consecutive years of surplus after years in the red marks a pivotal turning point in the institution's future. Universities are easy to take for granted. But if they begin to struggle, the effects ripple outwards into the communities that depend upon it. Fewer research partnerships, constrained program offerings, and reduced capacity to attract talent and investment compounds over time, chipping away at a region's strength. With 12,644 students enrolled as of May 2025, VIU feeds directly into the regional workforce through co-ops, work-integrated learning, internships, and permanent employment after graduation. Many choose to stay in Nanaimo, contributing skills, entrepreneurship, and spending power to the local economy. On average, a VIU bachelor's degree graduate earns $574,000 more over their working life than someone who entered the workforce with only a high school diploma. Multiply that across thousands of graduates who remain in the region and the compounding effect on Nanaimo's economic base and employee skillset becomes clear. Employers across key sectors, from manufacturing and technology to healthcare and professional services, depend on that pipeline. Long-term economic resilience depends on it too.

    How Mayotte Turned Discarded Tires into a Cultural Tradition

    In Mayotte, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique, a tire race tells the story of a world struggling with its waste. On the roads of Mayotte, an abandoned tire is never just an object. It is a piece of rubber that has reached the end of its life in a place where no system exists to take it back. A silent witness to the difficulties faced by island territories that must handle waste they did not produce, yet are forced to manage. In 1984, a physical education teacher, Jack Passe, decided to turn this reality into something positive. Drawing from a traditional Mahoran game in which children roll a tire using two sticks, he created the island's first "tire race". What began as a playful school activity soon became a cultural and athletic tradition, showing how local ingenuity can flourish where industrial solutions remain absent. The race demonstrates how communities can reclaim a problem and turn it into a moment of collective energy. Every tire recovered for training or competition is one less tire abandoned in the environment. But beyond the creativity hides a far more complex challenge underpinning the island's daily reality. Despite continuous efforts, Mayotte still faces structural constraints in managing used tires. Storage capacity is limited. Exporting waste for treatment is expensive in a territory where all recycling must happen elsewhere. Collection schedules vary across municipalities, and in certain areas, tires continue to appear in informal dumps. When filled with rainwater, they become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and contribute to the spread of disease. When burned, they release toxic smoke that contaminates soils and air. The tire race is a creative and symbolic response, but it does not resolve the underlying issue. Instead, it highlights a broader reality: island territories must manage objects designed and produced elsewhere, without meaningful support from the companies responsible for putting these products on the market.

The submerged aircraft is expected to become a focal point for dive excursions in St. Kitts, offering a structure that will evolve over time as marine life settles in and begins to grow across its surfaces. Divers can expect a site that combines exploration with gradual ecological development. Over time, coral and other organisms will attach to the aircraft, turning it into a functioning artificial reef that supports fish and other marine species. Sites like this typically become more dynamic with each passing year, as visibility, marine activity, and growth patterns change. The addition gives dive operators on the island a new product to offer, particularly for repeat visitors looking for something different from traditional reef dives. The preparation of the aircraft followed a detailed process designed to ensure that it could be placed in the water without impacting the surrounding marine environment. The plane underwent a multi-phase inspection led in part by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources, with oversight focused on environmental safety and compliance. One of the most critical steps involved the removal of all fuel and oil systems. These were fully drained and flushed to eliminate any risk of contamination once the aircraft was submerged. That process is standard for reef creation projects but requires careful execution to meet environmental guidelines and protect nearby ecosystems.
